Our farm has been a family farm for over 150 years.  The farmhouse was built in 1849 by Colonel W.E. Drummond and the Drummond family operated the farm for nearly 100 years.

In 1948, Wendell and Irene Russell bought the farm and operated "Pine Hill Farm," a nationally recognized Jersey dairy farm, until their retirement in the late 1980s.

Under their grandnephew's family, Steve and Julie Russell, the farm was converted to organic hay production in 1989.

In 1998, Kate and Peter Newkirk bought the farm to grow and raise organic herbs and vegetables renaming the farm:

WinterGreen
herbs and vegetables.

Our Goal is to provide the highest quality certified organic Maine grown herb teas & fresh herbs and vegetables.

Kate Newkirk came to the farm after 20 years of work as a soil scientist in Virginia, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.  Kate has a Master's Degree in Agronomy and her work experience includes working for the Virginia Cooperative Soil Survey Program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and for The Ecosystems Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole MA.

With a love of herbs and gardening, Kate's intent for WinterGreen herbs and vegetables is to produce high quality Maine grown herbs and vegetables.

Peter Newkirk came to the farm after working 10 years for the USDA-NRCS (SCS). Peter is a Licensed Professional Engineer and has a BS degree in Agricultural Engineering. Peter has extensive experience landscaping and farming and is responsible for upkeep of our grounds and farm equipment and for refurbishing the farmhouse.
