What is a CSA?

CSA is the abbreviation for Community Supported Agriculture.  It is a system where consumers invest in their local farms.  These investments help farmers' cash flow at the beginning of the season.  The consumer-investor-member of a CSA draws on their investment by receiving farm fresh products through the growing season.  As with any investment the consumer will normally receive interest in the form of additional purchasing power from the farm.   CSA investors also share the risks that farmers' faces such as droughts or crop damage from weather and browsing animals.  Most CSA's work on a growing season basis.  Investors buy shares at the beginning of the season and are expected to use their shares plus any dividends before the end of the season. Shares are only valid in the growing season for which they are purchased.  If an investor has a balance at the end of the season it is NOT refundable.

HOW OUR CSA IS DIFFERENT

CSA's work in many ways but the CSA at WinterGreen herbs & vegetables is unique. We run our CSA and Farm Stand on-line where our members "shop" for the products they want and don't have to take home more than they need or products they don't want. They can also skip weeks for vacations without forfeiting any shares. By utilizing the web our customers have the added convenience of ordering from home and when they come to the farm their order is filled and ready to go.  We also provide a delivery service for CSA members. We keep our customers up to date with what's happening on the farm through our weekly blog

This unique approach requires participation of our customers.  Purchasing Shares requires Spending Shares.  If customers don't spend their shares by the end of the season there is NO REFUND, we have already invested your shares in the farm and any extra produce we harvest that is not distributed will be donated to local food pantry's or senior centers.
